Gilmore Interior Design was engaged by BaptistCare in August 2010 with a brief to design the interiors for a new 160 bed facility to replace the ageing Morling Lodge, which is one of the first aged care facilities to be built in Canberra.
Our involvement included: the design and documentation of the interior building finishes as well as selection of furnishings and decorative items and artwork.
The facilities of the new home include: a main public foyer and reception, café, hair salon, cinema room, chapel, wellness clinic, day spa and 8 wings of residential accommodation including guest rooms, lounge/dining spaces, winter gardens and sun rooms.
GID included elements of way finding into the design of the interiors for the accommodation wings, imbuing them with a unique, functional character. The interiors have a sense of elegance and warmth achieved with the application of carefully selected finishes.
The inspiration for the overall interior concept of finishes, colours, fabrics and artworks was drawn from the natural environment of Canberra and its surrounding parklands, trees and distant mountains. Spectacular photographic panels were commissioned of each of the national parks that the wings are named after and are located at the entry to each wing.
The new facility offers residents many levels of care as well as specialised dementia and palliative care in a beautifully landscaped setting located close to shopping, transport and the CBD.
BaptistCare describes this facility as ‘a new benchmark’ with ‘the integration of state of the art assistive technology for residents’. The innovative building has been designed and built to a high standard of environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.
Gilmore Interior Design worked in conjunction with Stanton Dahl Architects to achieve a wonderful outcome for BaptistCare.
